Job candidate feels confident during job interview, despite CEO arriving 15 minutes late, until he realizes, through a phone notification, that the CEO was simultaneously reposting the same job offer online while on their call: 'Seriously, the audacity'

  • Employee on his phone during a meeting
  • The CEO was 15 minutes late for my interview, then asked me to post the job ad in my group while we were still on the call.

I had a final interview last Wednesday for a job I was really excited about. The interview was with the CEO himself.
  • He joined the call 15 minutes late, which was the first red flag. He only joined after I sent a quick message to his assistant to ask if we were still on.
  • When he joined, he did apologize, and the interview started going very well. I felt like I was k ling it.
  • But in the last five minutes or so, I noticed his eyes kept looking down, and it was obvious he was typing on his phone.
  • Suddenly, my phone vibrated. I looked and it was a notification from a networking group that I run.
  • I saw the CEO, at that very moment, asking members to share a link for the same job I was interviewing for.
  • Man on his computer
  • Meaning, he was asking people to apply while he was still talking to me! Seriously, the audacity.
  • We were literally still on the video call together. I'm very conflicted and don't know what to do.
  • Should I ignore it and see if I get an offer, or should I confront him about it?
  • What's the right thing to do in a situation like this?
  • NoRestForTheWitty I had a very similar experience about 20 years ago. The interviewer told me he had more people to talk to. During my drive home, he reposted the job on LinkedIn on his profile. I emailed him politely that I was removing myself from consideration, because fuck that shit. Whether you remove yourself or not kind of depends on your tolerance for that kind of thing. I'm very sensitive to rejection. You might want to play it out and see what happens.
  • International-Ant174 You didn't call him out on the zoom? "Um, excuse me CEO XYZ, did you just now post the very position online which I am interviewing for? So tell me CEO, what is it that is the issue with my candidacy? Am I not entertaining enough? Am I lacking a skillset or an air of professionalism? While we are here in the moment, please explain to me how I am lacking as a candidate?" You already knew it was dead when they posted it, might as well get them to say why (or force them to actu
  • spakz1993 F*ck that guy!!! Are you serious?!!! Absolutely about mission. You don't wanna work for such a disrespectful leader. I'd potentially email HR and copy in the CEO to let them know that I had received that correspondence (include a screenshot). Try to be civil, but definitely tell them know so hopefully they won't be dumb enough to do this with the next candidate.
  • Candidates waiting to be interviewed for a job
  • Appropriate-Voice407 That's a very odd thing to do, i never heard anything like that before. If it were me I wouldn't confront him about it because | cant see what i can gain from it. I already gained an important piece of information which is that the ceo is a weirdo. If the position involves interaction with him i would definitely not take it. If you can find Glassdoor data you could see how much he is rated and the company, if no data i would seriously reconsider joining as bad ceo often impl
  • Swimming-Hamster2478 Don't blow up your networking group over this. There will be some blow back depending on how you react. Eventually you will cross paths with the CEO if he's a member of your group. In 5 years will this matter? That's the question to ask. Your networking group may still be here in five years but this job most likely won't be a part of your life anwyay. Professionalism is very important here.
  • Petit_Nicolas 1964 Why would you confront him? Just look for other jobs.
  • Run Striking-Flatworm691
  • Daisymaisey23 Does he know you run the networking group? Is your name public as the owner/moderator? If not I would kick him out of the group.
  • Capital_Moment8342 The way I would've commented so fast underneath that post. That lack of professionalism translates, there's no way other ceos don't know this guy sucks (or know him at all tbh).
  • Anomalypawa This is a normal CEO behaviour. If a CEO is late to your interview and you were not officially notified and apologised to before, be ready for things not to go well. The true sign you have lost that job is if they keep moving your final interview date
